The University awarded a contract for Alcon's Acrysof IQ IntraocularLens - eye surgery to Alcon Laboratories, Incorporated, Fort Worth, TX, for an estimated $960,000.
Purchase from Alcon Lab's their US patented Acrysof IQ IOLs (intraocular lens. Alcon?s Acrysof IQ IOLs (intraocular lens) are designed to be used with the existing Alcon equipment namely, Alcon Monarch II and Monarch III Injectors, the Monarch Loading Forceps, and Monarch IOL Cartridges. Alcon's Acrysof IOL's are the only IOL's with the proprietary specifications designed exclusively for the Monarch Injectors, Loading Forceps, and Cartridges.

The Acrysof lenses are a single acrylate/methacylate copolymer material and are inserted in a one step process. This results in greater toleration by patients, increased ease of insertions/implantation with less time needed to implant, greater lens epithelial proliferations rate (rate of lens tissue growth) around the new lens, and a reduced explantation rate.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the item or service is copyrighted or patented and is not available except from the holder of the copyright or patent.
