The University awarded a contract for Watchman's Left atrial appendage device to Boston Scientific Inc., Matlborough, MA, for an estimated $1,875,000.
Purchase Boston Scientific's Watchman a left atrial appendage device which aids in a stroke risk reduction option for patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation who are seeking an alternative to long-term warfarin therapy.

The WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure Device is a catheter-delivered heart implant designed to close the left atrial appendage (LAA). The WATCHMAN Device is permanently implanted at or slightly distal to the ostium (opening) of the LAA, which is believed to be the source of a majority of stroke-causing blood clots in people with non-valvular AF. By closing off the LAA to prevent the migration of blood clots from the LAA, the risk of stroke may be reduced and, over time, patients may be able to stop taking anticoagulants.

Based upon thorough knowledge of Cardiology research and FDA related status, we are confident that no other provider exists in the marketplace that can fulfill the specifications that the WATCHMAN can achieve.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the item or service is copyrighted or patented and is not available except from the holder of the copyright or patent.
