The University awarded a contract for glucose monitoring supplies.
Glucose monitoring supplies for the monitoring of sugar levels in the blood of patients. A test strip is inserted into a glucose meter. The meter pricks the side of the patients fingertip with the needle (lancet) provided with the test kit. The edge of the test strip makes contact with a drop of blood. The meter will display the patients blood sugar level on a screen after a few seconds.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Roche Diagnostics' blood glucose test strips have to do with direct patient treatment and care. Without access to these specific supplies, the Hospital would not be able to deliver proper care to patients under its care and would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
