The University awarded a contract for Intracranial Catheters from Penumbra to Penumbra Incorporated, Alameda, CA, for an estimated $900,000.
Purchase from Penumbra their US patented Intracranial Catheters used to revascularize large vessel occlusions in the intracranial circulatory system. The system is used for ischemic stroke (a stroke resulting from an obstruction within a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain). Only this system can remove the clot from brain successfully without further harm or damage being done.

Only Penumbra make the revascularization system used for neurointerventional procedures to remove brain clots, occlusions in the large brain vessel. The components of the system allow the surgeon to work on the proximal (nearest to the point) surface of the occlusion which eliminates the need to navigation through or beyond the occlusion and this reduces the trauma to the patient.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the item or service is copyrighted or patented and is not available except from the holder of the copyright or patent.
