The University
awarded
a contract for two circuit breakers to
Eaton Electrical, Inc., Chicago, IL
for
$32,000.
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the
compatibility of equipment, accessories, replacement parts, or service is a paramount consideration.
The circuit breakers have to be compatible with the existing distribution switchgear. The original switchgear lineup was manufactured by Cutler-Hammer, and only Cutler-Hammer breakers can be installed. The original switchgear lineup was bidded out in 1995 for an estimated amount of 2 million dollars. Not all circuit breakers were purchased as part of the original bid due to lack of funding. The 12,000 AMP volt circuit breakers need to be added to the existing Cutler-Hammer switchgear lineup to accomodate the addition of another 1000 MVA transformer. The additional transformer is required so two additional chillers can be installed in the Westside Campus central refrigeration plant.
