The University awarded a contract for a cell sorting upgrade to BD Biosciences, San Jose, CA for an estimated $35,429.
The upgrade is for existing 3-color flow cytometer purchased from BD Biosciences in 1999 for approximately $99,500. The upgrade involves replacing the instrument's fluidics module. The fluidics module collects population of cells and sends them one-by-one down a fine capillary. Presently, the instrument recognizes and counts different types of cells. The upgrade shall allow the instrument to isolate selected unique cells from the population. This upgrade is important because the process shall save time in isolating stem cells which are used to treat spinal chord injury, brain tumors and other cancer patients. This item is patented and is not available except from the holder under US Patent Number 5,766,709.
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the compatibility of equipment, accessories, replacement parts, or service is a paramount consideration.
