The University awarded a contract for Specialty pharmaceuticals from McKesson.
This emergency/quick purchase was required due to a situation in which immediate action was needed to prevent any disruption in University services.
Three Ambulatory Care pharmacies, MacNeal Cancer Center; the Oncology Pharmacy and the Eye & Ear Infirmary utilize the McKesson Specialty pharmaceuticals for patient prescriptions.

The emergency purchase request is for the period until sole source reference # 384JCM is reviewed, approved and awarded.

The specialty pharmaceuticals are differentiated from standard pharmaceuticals in three ways:

a)Drug cost:
Specialty pharmaceuticals tend to be very expensive. They can range in price from $ 1,000 to $ 50,000 per dose. One in particular is upwards of $50,000.
b)Limited Allocation :
Specialty pharmaceutical distribution may be limited and controlled distribution due to short supply, limited productions and/or the need to manage inventory (e.g. special shortage and handling of product, too costly to have wide distribution channels-can’t afford to stock in various warehouses).
c)FDA regulation protocols:
Protocols for use of certain specialty pharmaceuticals, due to their severe tetragenic effects, are regulated by the FDA. This includes special training of PharmD’s dispensing the drug and certification before a university Pharmacy is permitted to purchase.
