The University awarded a contract for IDEXX Lab testing for microbial mice disease.
This emergency/quick purchase was required due to a situation in which immediate action was needed to prevent any disruption in University services.
An unexpected disease out-break to the mouse colonies will necessitate unique and specialized testing by the long term testing provider (see 1018MNK), IDEXX Laboratories. In addition, this health situation has necessitated that all new mice acquisitions undergo the quarantine/rederivation process (that is, quarantine and testing to make sure that the mice are disease-free from pathogen contamination). Please note that multiple lab locations will undergo the quarantine/rederivation process.

Some testing services by IDEXX Laboratories were performed in conjunction with the determination that a microbial outbreak existed. These were processed as a small purchase procurement via the issuance of Purchase Orders.

The services performed are described as: A microbial agent, Bordetella pseudohinzii, was identified within the UIC mouse colony recently. This agent alters the physiology of the lung, which can negatively impact pulmonary research. a.In order to determine the prevalence of the microbial agent throughout the campus we tested 70 animal rooms (3 test points/room x $45/room) for a total cost of $9450. This testing was done by IDEXX. b.In order to determine the most effective way to eliminate the microbial agent from the mouse colony, a study was conducted using two methods of antibiotic therapy. These studies resulted in approximately 144 tests at $45/test for a total cost of $6480. This testing was done by IDEXX.

An emergency is declared as additional testing services will be necessary to eliminate the microbial disease, Bordetella pseudohinzii from targeted investigator groups. In addition, all new mice acquisitions will continue to be quarantined and may require rederivation. The ongoing testing until the disease is completely eliminated will continue.
