The University awarded a contract for a Community Health Worker program.
The Community Health Worker (CHW) program at Malcolm X will focus on universal competencies essential for primary and preventive healthcare. This coursework will benefit students interested in working in health or social care. Whether they choose to enter the workforce as a CHW or continue their education in other health professions. The curriculum will prepare them to serve as a liaison between the healthcare system and the community. Some roles students can apply to include Health Educator, Patient Navigator, Outreach Specialist, Promotor(a) de Salud, and Community Health Worker, among others. The CHW program covers the same knowledge and competencies required by university-level (bachelor's and master's degree) health educator programs. The school will provide certification training for new CHWs and a certified Apprenticeship site. Tuition and fees for 30 participants and 15 people in an Apprentice Program.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) The amount was determined by a grant received from HRSA for Community Health Workers Training. The grant states that we must have collaborative partners that would offer a basic certification program. The State of Illinois has approved Malcolm X College to offer such a CHW Certification Program for residents of the City of Chicago.
