The University awarded a contract for mental health counselors.
Licensed Mental Health counselors will provide on-campus counseling services and therapy to UIC John Marshall Law School Students.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The therapy/counseling sessions offered by Sankofa to our students are essential for their health. As a satellite school, separated from the main UIC Campus it means our students would be required to travel some distance in order to find appropriate Health services offered by UIC. In addition to providing individual and relationship counseling to students, Sankofa provide consultation on matters of student mental health to the Student Support and Emergency Team. Members of the Sankofa team provide as-needed workshops for the community (students, staff, or faculty). For example, they have offered grief counseling to the community after a student death, speak in faculty meetings about how to help manage student stress, offered a workshop to staff about stress during institutional mergers, and are invited to speak directly in a number of classes.
