The University awarded a contract for Compounded IV Bags and Syringes.
Compounded IV bags and syringes for hospital use. The concentrations and container sizes of the medications purchased from PharMEDium are the ones that have been requested by our medical staff that will provide optimal benefit and safety to the patients to which they are administered. Many of the medications obtained from PharMEDium are classified as high risk medications so it is important to have the most appropriate container sizes and concentrations.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Pharmedium's product offering best matches the needs of our patient population. We are able to purchase the concentrations/volumes that have been established as standards by the institution for critical care drugs, OR syringes and other medications. From a medication safety perspective, Pharmedium's labeling on their products is excellent and they provide tamper evident packaging for those medications that require it. Pharmedium's pricing has always been competitive with other outsourcing companies. In addition, they have a tiered rebate program that we take advantage of based on volume purchased.
