The University awarded a contract for Abbott Medical Baerveldt Glaucoma Implants.
Abbott Medical Optics, offers an implant known as the Abbott Medical Baerveldt glaucoma implant. It is indicated for use in patients with medically uncontrollable glaucoma, uveitis (inflammation of the uvea) and poor surgical prognosis. The Baerveldt glaucoma implant has the combination of one-quadrant installation and a large surface area. Specifically, the Baerveldt Glaucoma Implants have been deemed as effective treatment for IOP (Intra Occular Pressure). The benefits are easier implantation, reduced surgical time, less trauma, and faster healing.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Abbott Medical Optics, Incorporated implant and supplies have to do with direct patient care. Without access to these specific supplies the hospital would not be able to offer surgical procedures and care, which in tern would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss in revenue to the hospital to the hospital
