The University awarded a contract for blood bank and therapeutic apheresis services.
Vitalant to provide blood components and transfusion, donor and therapeutic apheresis services to UI Hospital and its patients through the operation of the blood bank and therapeutic apheresis departments.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Vitalant has been providing services to UI Hospital since 2014 and has been able to meet our needs regardless of national and local blood donor shortages. Vitalant is the only organization that provides both blood components and transfusion-related services in the Chicago area. In addition, they provide and manage these services on-site in order to provide blood components timely to patients in the Hospital, Emergency Department and Surgery.
