The University awarded a contract for a scanning electron microscope.
Supply of JCM-7000 Neoscope III Benchtop Scanning electron microscope, JEOL Smart Coater, JEOL Standard Rotary Pump and one year service agreement/warranty included with purchase.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) The scanning electron microscopy is an important analysis method in biomaterial characterization for biomedical application. The Department of Biomedical Sciences at Rockford campus includes, Nanomedicine laboratory, Regenerative Medicine and Disability Research and 3D printing lab focusing on development of new materials and scaffolds for drug delivery and cell/tissue engineering applications. The research requires routine characterization of the materials developed for biological applications. SEM is one such characterization method which will give conclusive remarks on the surface morphology of the nano/micro materials, and their interaction with cells. In addition, energy dispersive spectrum attachment of SEM will provide elemental analysis (chemistry of the materials) to confirm the synthesis of the material. Sputter coater is an accessory instrument needed for sample preparation for SEM analysis. Hence this procurement is important for UIC Rockford campus.
