The University awarded a contract for Chromium X & Accessory Kit.
Chromium X is the most flexible instrument, with the most advanced hardware and wireless connectivity. It runs all single cell assays, including new high-throughput assays for Single Cell Immune Profiling and Single Cell Gene Expression.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) There is a new high throughput kit (HT) for scRNA-seq from 10x Genomics that it is not compatible with our controller. There new controller, Chromium X, can process 16 samples at a time. There are several additional advantages of the new Controller. It has redesigned pumps and microfluidic that leads to a lower rate of cell doublets (4%) than our current lab controller (10%). It can recover twice as many cells (20,000 cells per well versus 10,000 cells per well now). Chromium X can process fixed cells. This is a major development and something that we have been often asked by prospective clients. These capabilities will expand the pool of UIC scientists who can use single cell in their work. There is a 25% cost saving per sample when using HT scRNA-seq kits, which will make the experiments more affordable to users.
