Description of Projects
North Campus Parking Deck:
Current parking demand on the north campus is met by surface parking in a number of lots in the area. In the future, these lots will become unavailable as they are used as construction sites for expansion of academic and research park facilities. As the population of this area of the campus increases, and the available surface parking decreases, the alternative means for accommodating existing displaced and additional demand for parking will be a major parking deck.
The influx of potential consumers and the relative lack of support services in the north campus area make the inclusion of some retail space an attractive complement to the planned parking deck. It will also provide a much-needed revenue stream to help support the operation of the deck.
The University envisions a multi-use and multi-story project, which would include parking for 1504 cars on seven levels and approximately 20,000 gross square feet of retail space at the ground level on the south side. The project will be planned so that three additional floors (approximately 60,000 gross square feet for academic expansion) can be added above the retail space.
The project site is bounded by University Avenue on the north, Goodwin Avenue on the east, Clark Street on the south and Mathews Avenue on the west. The site lies within the boundaries of the Updated Campus Master Plan (approved by the UI Board of Trustees in October 1996) and within the corporate limits of the City of Urbana. The area is within easy walking distance of the Beckman Institute and most research facilities used by the College of Engineering. A new facility for the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and the new Thomas M. Siebel Center for Computer Science are to be built on sites immediately to the south. In addition, the North Center of the Research Park (possible total build-out estimated to be approximately 580,000 gross square feet) is planned be constructed to the east and southeast of the project site
Central Campus Parking Deck:
The recently completed parking master plan for the Urbana campus documents unmet demand for parking in the central campus as well as a potential crisis for adequate parking when the planned MBA Building is constructed on parking lot E-12 on campus. In order to begin to meet demand and to anticipate the loss of surface spaces in E-12, this Central Campus Parking Deck is proposed.
The project consists of constructing parking decks at the locations of the existing surface parking lots C-8 and C-9 on Fifth Street and on Sixth and Chalmers Streets. The parking decks are expected to provide spaces for 1,000 cars on seven levels. During program analysis the practicality of including office spaces for the Division of Campus Parking will be explored.
It is the intent of the University to hire a single firm to provide the professional services for both projects.
