Description of Project
Over the last two years, the Division of Campus Recreation, with assistance from outside and University consultants, conducted extensive analysis to determine students' recreational needs. In November, 2001, students voted on a referendum to support a $77.6M expansion and renovation of the IMPE and CRCE facilities.
The $77.6M project includes $54.8M to expand IMPE by adding 103,000 gsf, including 34,000 sq. ft. of strength and conditioning space; 1/6 mile track; 5 additional basketball/volleyball courts; 1 oversized multi-activity court (soccer, club activities, in-line hockey); and a climbing wall. The project will also renovate 234,000 gsf of IMPE space including 5 multi-purpose rooms; renovate all existing activity space, racquetball courts, SportWell, and locker rooms; add wet classroom; upgrade equipment/laundry room; add food service option and lounge and update existing the 50 m indoor pool.
On July 18, 2002, the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois approved employment of VOA, Chicago, IL (with Hughes Group Architects, Sterling VA as the recreation facility consultant) for the professional services for the project. The current schedule for IMPE is to complete planning by March, 2004, start construction in August, 2004 and be substantially complete by June, 2006. The scope of services for the Construction Manager will be to provide both pre-construction and construction phase services.
The expansion and renovation will be designed to ensure as little interruption as possible for Campus Recreation users.
