Project Description
The University of Illinois is seeking professional services consultants to conduct a comprehensive
development plan for a state-of-the-art building addition to Rodger Adams Laboratory (RAL) for the
Departments of Biochemistry, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Chemistry on the Urbana /
Champaign Campus. In response to well established and substantial needs, the College of Liberal Arts
and Sciences (LAS) has proposed that a Feasibility Study be initiated that will address the near term and long range requisites of the department's instructional and research missions, and incorporate them into a transformative facility that would positively impact some of the most acclaimed, active, productive, and well-funded units on campus.
Project Objectives:
The project shall enhance academic experiences and curricular activities that genuinely reflect and
represent the multiplicity of the sciences locally, nationally and globally. It is intended to facilitate collaborative relationships among departments and other campus units while embracing synergies and advancing guiding educational principles. The study shall also identify program factors related to a building addition to RAL which will yield a modern, interdisciplinary research and education facility that will fortify the participating unit?s position on the cutting edge of their disciplines. Planning efforts will also address a number of LAS and campus needs, including freeing up space for classrooms, examining operational efficiencies, and possible consolidation of other units. The specific benefits envisioned include: creating a 250 plus seat, modern, high-profile lecture hall (that facilitates live scientific demonstrations) close to the main quad that can be used not only by the three involved departments but also by other units on campus; developing additional classrooms in neighboring Davenport Hall by moving research laboratories currently used by these departments into new spaces; integrating scattered laboratory spaces occupied by department faculty into RAL and Chemical and Life Sciences Laboratory complex for enhanced departmental efficiencies and alliances; increasing undergraduate and graduate synergies between key departments; producing contemporary, safe research space for cutting edge molecular sciences and catalysis research; and facilitating interactions with new collaboration areas.
