The University awarded a contract for
boiler tube repairs.
This emergency/quick purchase was required due to a situation in which
immediate action was needed to prevent any disruption in University services
Boiler #7 at Abbott Power Plant is currently shut down due to some boiler tubes that need to be repaired. The boiler tubes were recently tested and many of the tubes were found to be below the minimum wall thickness necessary to run the boiler. The Babcock and Wilcox Company can furnish replacement boiler tubes with a two week delivery period. One other option would be to remove the existing tubes and send them to a tube bender to use as a pattern then return the bent tubes to test their fit. This process will take a minimum of 3 weeks with a good chance some of the tubes may need to be bent again to insure a proper fit. This would extend the delivery and repair even further. Each day the repairs are delayed, the University will incur approximately $17,500 in additional fuel costs to generate steam utilizing natural gas fired boilers.
