a contract for a CNC TRAK Lathe to
Southwestern Industries, Inc., Rancho Dominguez, CA
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the
item or service is copyrighted or patented and is not available except from the holder of the copyright or patent.
Southwestern Industries, Inc. is the only known manufacturer of a Computer Numeric Control (CNC) Lathe with a TRAKing feature. This TRAKing feature allows the lathe to be controlled by manual handwheels. These additional manual handwheels allow the operator to control the operation by hand each step of the way and to test each operation with a test run before doing the final programming of the lathe for production. This prevents spoilage of expensive parts, machine damage, tool breakage, and the potential for materials to fly off the machine and injure the operator. This lathe will be used by the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (TAM) which operates a support research lab not only for TAM, but the Department of Aerospace Engineering as well as many other departments on campus. This lab makes specially designed parts and prototypes for research equipment as well as repetitive student tension specimens for classroom projects.
