The University awarded a contract for ProQuest/EBL Ebooks to ProQuest LLC, Ann Arbor, MI, for an estimated $500,000.
Online access to the ProQuest/EBL ebook catalog records loaded into the integrated library system for the license period July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016 will allow continued access for current library systems users as well as new libraries to these records.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the If possible to find the exact same unique ebook titles that have been purchased for consortial use from another provider, the project work would be similar to suspending access. The catalog records from another provider would have different urls and different authentication requirements. All current ebook data would need to be deleted and replaced with the new provider's catalog records. This would entail a major disruption in access to these titles until all catalogs and discovery services could be updated. In addition to the tremendous amount of information technology work, if CARLI were to contract with another consortia or publisher for this content, CARLI members would be required to pay a higher price plus an administrative surcharge (3% - 5%). In addition, to participate in other consortial database offerings may require individual membership fees from institutions. Contracting directly with ProQuest LLC will provide the lowest price possible to CARLI member libraries.
