The University awarded a contract for DNA sequencing services to ACGT Inc, Wheeling, IL, for an estimated $75,000.
DNA sequencing is a key technology in all areas of molecular biology including microbiology and biochemistry. It is used for both experimental discovery and for quality control purposes. DNA constructions utilize processes that are not 100% accurate and each completed construct must be sequenced to insure that the construction was completed as planned. The turnaround time must be short, otherwise waiting for sequence information becomes limiting to research progress as people cannot proceed with their projects until the quality of their tools is confirmed or until they have data to analyze.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the compatibility of equipment, accessories, replacement parts, or service is a paramount consideration. Items are also required for research and no other source is able to meet the researcher's documented need.
