University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign awarded a contract for exploration well drilling in the estimated amount of $44,000 on Friday, February 3, 2006 . Illinois State Geological Survey, as an agency of the University of Illinois and the State of Illinois, is conducting information gathering of data with regard to exploration for potential carbon dioxide storage. The contractor owns the mineral rights and engaged in drilling at a site which is considered a viable site for exploration. If project stopped, drilling at the site would be abandoned and the opportunity would be lost for determining the potential capabilities of the area for carbon dioxide storage. This emergency/quick purchase was required due to a situation in which immediate action was needed to prevent any disruption in University services.
