The University awarded a contract for digital and preservation services to OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc., Bethlehem, PA for an estimated $160,000.
Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC) is the only source that can simultaneously produce the microfilm and digital images, store that microfilm in a proper vault with appropriate climate controls, and ensure the security and safety of our documents while on site.
OCLC provides duplication services for that film, provides original cataloguing, posts film updating, and microfilm scanning services that require strict adherence to exacting standards that are different from standard records filming.
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the digital and preservation services provided by OCLC have the unique capacity to produce both preservation quality microfilm (as a very distinct entity from the high-volume world of records filming) and digital imaging services. OCLC stands in a class alone by adding cataloguing and metadata services to their preservation microfilming bureau. This insures protection and safety for all Library documents.
