Western Illinois University awarded a contract for carpet in the estimated amount of $250,000 on Wednesday, June 26, 2002 . As a result of air sampling, asbestos fibers were found in Thompson Residence Hall. Immediate action was required to ensure the public's health as well as to minimize disruption of services in the residence hall. The vinyl-backed carpet is being used to minimize the amount of material which could become airborne. This emergency/quick purchase was required due to a situation in which public health or safety was threatened.
