The University awarded a contract for medical waste management services.
Stericycle will provide waste management services for the removal of sharps, hazardous waste, pharmaceutical, and regulated medical waste throughout the hospital. Their responsibility will be to collect and haul-away sharps, hazardous waste, and pharmaceutical waste off site for proper disposal.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) It is necessary to provide the highest level of care to the patients within UI Health and medical waste removal service is critical to maintaining patient and medical staff safety. Without access to these services, the Hospital would not be able to offer patient care that in turn would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
