The University awarded a contract for Oxbryta.
Oxbryta, an oral medication used to treat sickle cell disease.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Oxbryta is a breakthrough therapy drug approved with orphan drug status by the Food and Drug Administration to treat sickle cell disease. It is only available to patients through select specialty pharmacies approved by the FDA. UI Hospital is one of these approved pharmacies. Treatment of sickle cell disease is an important part of healthcare delivery provided by UI Health to the community.
