The University awarded a contract for spinal fusion implants.
The medical supplies provided by AlphaTec Spine, Inc are used in surgical treatment of spine disorders with spinal fusion. Fusion implants are used for spinal fusion surgeries. There are a few different types of fusion implants, which also come in a range of sizes and materials including titanium and carbon fiber. Spinal fusion implants consist screws, bits, plates, cages, connectors and rods.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The surgical implants provided by AlphaTec Spine, Inc have to do with direct patient care service. Without this type of patient implants the hospital will not be able to provide this type of procedure and a patient will go else where and we will take a loss in revenue.
