The University awarded a contract for medical trocars.
Applied Medical offers medical trocars that are used in laparoscopic surgery. A trocar is a medical device that is made up of an obturator (which may be a metal or plastic sharpened or non-bladed tip), a cannula (basically a hollow tube), and a seal. Trocars are placed through the abdomen during laparoscopic surgery. In patient terms, laparoscopic surgery has the advantages of avoiding large open wounds or incisions and thus of decreasing blood loss, pain and discomfort. Patients have fewer unwanted effects from analgesia because less analgesia is required. The fine instruments (trocars) are less apt to cause tissue trauma and blood loss.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The Applied Medical trocars ave to do with direct patient care and without them, the University would not be able to offer certain laparoscopic procedures that in turn would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
