The University awarded a contract for Surgical Instrumentation.
Surgical Instruments are used to provide direct patient care in a surgical setting (Main Hospital, Perioperative Services). This purchase was precipitated by a safety issue wherein the integrity of the Kerrison rongeurs currently in use were compromised through constant sterilization, leading to grooves of the screws getting stripped and the screw actually falling out mid procedure. In order to avoid this 'safety event' from occurring again, Perioperative Services is replacing all of the current Kerrison rongeurs with Kerrison rongeurs that are quick release and do not have screws that must be removed for sterilization.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Without these supplies, patient safety would be compromised and procedures requiring this instrumentation would have to be canceled.
