The University awarded a contract for DLC TA-SHG pro laser system for 399 nm.
We require a high-power laser with line width of 100 kHz to drive a strong atomic transition. This requires very high bandwidth (MHz) feedback to the laser frequency as well as a very low passive instability level. We require the un-stabilized laser line width to be 20 kHz. Moreover, we require relatively high power (less than 1 W) for each laser such that we can drive the atomic transition very quickly with several separate beams from several different spatial directions.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) This atomic transitions occur at wavelengths for which semiconductor diode lasers are not readily available (399 nm). The best remaining options is to start with a 2x longer wavelength for which semiconductor laser technology is very robust and then perform a non-linear frequency doubling process called Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) to halve the wavelength.(30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8))
