The University awarded a contract for canopy badges.
Canopy badges are wearable emergency alert devices that allow staff to discreetly request immediate security assistance during emergencies or threatening situations. When activated, the badge sends the user's GPS location to security for a rapid response and provides activity reporting to support ongoing safety initiatives.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Without this exemption staff will lose access to a critical emergency alert system, increasing the risk of delayed security response during incidents involving aggressive or threatening individuals. This could result in increased liability, higher costs associated with workplace injuries or safety incidents, and potential disruptions to patient care and hospital operations.
