The University awarded a contract for eye bank services.
Eversight is a nonprofit organization that operates an eye bank, collecting donor eye tissue for implantation to help restore patients' eyesight. The donor tissue is used in Endothelial Keratoplasty, a corneal transplant technique designed to restore vision when the inner cell layer of the cornea is not functioning properly. The implants consist of corneal tissue and other eye tissues.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The medical implants offered by Eversight are crucial for patient care. Without these implants we would not be able to offer surgical care, which could lead to a loss in revenue for the hospital.
