The University awarded a contract for Hemodialysis equipment and supplies.
NxStage Medical Inc. provides hemodialysis equipment and supplies designed for use in both hospital and home settings. Hemodialysis is a critical therapy for patients with kidney issues, as it filters waste, removes excess fluid, and balances essential electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, chloride, calcium, magnesium, and phosphate. The system allows patients or caregivers to easily install an acute care drop-in cartridge into the hemodialysis equipment, which effectively removes toxins from the patients blood as part of the dialysis process.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) This procurement is in the best interests of the University because the medical supplies from NxStage Medical Inc. are essential for direct patient care. These hemodialysis supplies are critical for the hospital to provide proper treatment to patients requiring dialysis. Without access to these supplies, the hospital would be unable to meet patient care needs, potentially driving patients to seek care elsewhere. This would not only compromise the hospitals ability to serve the community but could also result in a significant loss of revenue, negatively impacting the hospitals operations and financial sustainability.
