Project Description

Illinois State University is seeking professional architectural and engineering services from firms who have experience in higher education science laboratory facilities.

The Science Laboratory Building was opened for classes in 1996. This facility is primarily a Biology and Chemistry laboratory building with no traditional classroom spaces. A full basement was constructed as part of the original building, with a portion being mechanical space and a portion being used as interim storage for the two departments as well as physical plant storage. Mechanically, the building has 100% fresh air intake. The fume hoods are part of a manifold system with all of the exhaust rising to the roof. Six exhaust fans, with a heat recovery system, support the building?s fume hoods.

The University now desires to complete the basement space as usable laboratory space. The scope of this project involves making upgrades to the basement space to develop this space for research labs and teaching labs. This consultant shall be responsible for developing a design for refinement of these spaces in the basement area of the Science Laboratory Building to accommodate:

  1. Two biology research labs and one biology teaching lab
  2. Two chemistry research labs and one chemistry teaching lab
  3. One all-gender restroom
  4. Code required egress from the two existing stairwells to the basement space
  5. Appropriate mechanical supply and exhaust connections for a minimum of fourteen fume hoods to be located in the labs
  6. Necessary plumbing connections for a number of laboratory sinks based on minimum requirements and program need

Architecture and Engineering firms interested in submitting their qualifications should have demonstrated knowledge, experience, and expertise with facilities of this typology. The designers and any required sub-consultants will be responsible for developing a comprehensive construction budget and schedule for this project. It is planned that the construction will be phased to allow all existing building operations to remain fully functional.
