The University awarded a contract for laboratory animals for research to The Jackson Laboratory, Chicago, IL, for an estimated $40,000.
Animals bred and maintained in isolated colonies become genetically adapted over time. The purchase of animals from the same vendor provides less variability in the research and thus greatly improves the quality and reproducibility of the studies.
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the genetic variations differ between colonies maintained by different vendors and therefore jeopardize consistency of experimental results.
