The University intends to award a contract for a demonstration unit to Biosound Esaote Inc. (c/o Smartsound Ultrasound Inc.) for $31,210.00.
This is a contract for a demonstration unit of Esaote 300 Picus Pro Ultrasound System.

Biosound Esaote Inc. is the only ultrasound equipment manufacturer dedicated to providing equipment specifically designed for the endocrinologist. As specialists in ultrasound education, they do their best to assure the doctor of an acceptable level of expertise in the practice of thyroid ultrasound procedures through onsite training programs. This is the only vendor dedicated to provide equipment for endocrine clinical and research use with CMT product in furthest development. The educational component is unique and extensive. This is the only vendor dedicated to an endocrinology education component. This ultrasound is also a clinical application for the examination of cartoid intima media thickness emerging in patients with diabetes or others at high risk of cardio- and cerebrovascular disease. Research utilizing caratoid intimal medial thickness as an endpoint is an anticipated application of this technology. The Picus is selected as the ultrasound system for the endocrinology market for the following unique features:
  • Upgradeability: only the Picus is designed to allow the doctor to purchase the system with "a la carte" features. They tailor the system to meet the doctors needs, but enable him/her to upgrade to other options as the doctors proficiency improves or the industry further mandates.
  • On board PC capability: offers pc option, which includes proprietary patient management software. With a seperate PC, the doctor will not have to shut down the practice of ultrasound if the PC malfunctions.
  • User friendly operation: the system is pre-programmed with a "thyroid" application for simple operation, but all features can be tailored to the doctors specifications as well.
  • Triple frequency probe technology: endocrinologists require a minimum of 10.0mhz for the performance of thyroid imaging. The Picus Pro version has the L523 probe with 12.0mhz, 10.0mhz, and 7.5mhz for higher scan line resolution for deeper goiters and for the penetration of very large necks. The specific advantage of this is this will facilitate the assesment of lymph nodes (benign versus malignant) and detection of thyroid cancer recurrences. Parathyroid visualization is also improved at these frequencies.
  • Portability: a 10" flipscreen monitor allows the doctor to remove the module from the cart; pick it up and go.

  • Also included in this purchase: two days of onsite educational training for faculty and a one-year extended warranty.
