The University awarded a contract for MedMined software module for Patient Events to Carefusion Solutions, LLC, Birmingham, AL, for an estimated $172,503.
Purchase the module titled Patient Event Advisor for the organization to interface with the existing MedMined software acquired from Carefusion Solutions LLC (reference 213-JCM).
The Carefusion software is a critical component of the Hospital's program for antimicrobial stewardship, infection control, and pharmacotherapy monitoring. The need to combat antimicrobial resistance through improved antimicrobial use has been highlighted recently by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
The alerts provided by MedMined Patient Event Advisor's module allow clinicians to respond quickly and target their improvement efforts resulting in improved clinical and financial outcomes. Studies indicate that correcting antimicrobial utilization through intervention could result in a reduced length of stay of 1.3 days per patient admission, reduce antimicrobial resistance, reduce adverse events such as C. difficile infection, and reduce drug expenditures (3-5). These unintented consequences of inappropriate antimicrobial therapy are often preventable, because they stem from correctable process breakdowns that recur. Although the solutions are often straightforward and inexpensive, the real challenge has always been identifying where and when these systemic patient care breakdowns are occurring early enough to avoid unnecessary morbidity, mortality, length of stay, and cost. Finding these opportunities is a daunting challenge. In the typical hospital there are over 21 billion possible permutations of the data elements Pharmacy must monitor (organisms, specimen sources, patient locations, phenotype combinations, etc.).
The MedMined® services are comprehensive services that allow hospitals to focus their efforts on targeted process improvement through automated surveillance rather than manually searching for opportunities to improve and the utilization of advanced analytics technology to be proactively notified of statistically significant clinicaly relevant changes within both the inpatient and oupatient populations.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the compatibility of equipment, accessories, replacement parts, or service is a paramount consideration.
