The University awarded a contract for a isothermal titration calorimeter.
The PEAQ-ITC instrument is is a highly sensitive, low volume isothermal titration calorimeter for the label-free in solution study of biomolecular interactions. The equipment is a newer model with much lower sample volume (280 uL) as compared to the other models. It is useful in the characterization of the thermodynamics of a binding reaction in solution. ITC is an well received orthogonal technique of SPR binding analysis.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) The Biophysics Core is in need of much lower sample volumes for both sample cell and injector sides in addition to faster sample run time. The PEAQ-ITC is a newer model with much lower sample volume (280 uL) as compared to the current unit (2 mL). This much lower sample volume will be extremely beneficial as not many PIs can afford 2 mL sample volume of 20-50 uM concentration samples, however 280 uL is feasible. Typical PEAQ ITC titration takes 40min, with equivalent settings (number of injections, spacing) while another ITC model available is at least 2x slower. A semi-automatic washing system is required for both sample cell and injector pipette and this is the only unit that can provide the rapid run time. Hence, it is beneficial to upgrade to the PEAQ-ITC unit as it is the most advanced model available and no other ITC instrument can provide this low sample volume with rapid sample run time.
