Description of Project
The Illinois Natural History Survey is a Division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and for the past 60 years has occupied the Natural Resources Building. The Survey has been in existence for over 140 years, and is recognized as the nation's premier natural history survey. Its mission is to investigate and document the biological resources of Illinois and to acquire and provide natural history information that can be used to promote the common understanding, conservation, and management of these resources.

The new facility will be located within the South Center of the Research Park at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, near the Natural Resources Studies Annex west of Oak Street and north of Hazelwood Drive. Ultimately, this new Natural History Survey Building will provide offices, laboratories and specialized facilities for approximately 400 people (250 scientists, plus 150 support staff and students). Total project size is estimated at about 210,000 gsf. Phase 1 of this project will be about 80,000 gsf and will include laboratories and offices for research, the Survey's library, several biological collections, and administrative/support offices. Phase 1 will house approximately 180 people (100 scientists, plus 80 support staff and students).
