The University awarded a contract for SFX Software Maintenance to Ex Libris USA Inc, Des Plaines, IL, for an estimated $119,433.
The Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) provides essential library infrastructure and resources to sustain the academic excellence of programs at 131 public universities, community colleges, private colleges and universities, and special libraries throughout Illinois. Through CARLI, libraries leverage their combined resources to meet the research needs of 939,000 higher education students, faculty, and staff, including over 102,000 across the three University of Illinois campuses. A list of CARLI member libraries is available at http://www.carli.illinois.edu/membership/mem-libs.
Members of CARLI choose to participate in programs and services available and supported by the consortium. SFX is one of the products offered by CARLI. The SFX software produced by Ex Libris is a link resolver. A link resolver is an essential part of contemporary library automation. It connects students and researchers from citation-level databases in which libraries have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to the ??appropriate copy?? of the electronic full-text in which libraries have likewise invested hundreds of thousands of dollars and for which the students and researchers seek. Without a link resolver in the middle, there is no connection between the indexes of ??what exists?? and the repositories of ??what the library has.??
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the procurement is software license, upgrade or maintenance.
