The University awarded a contract for Currens Hall chiller repairs.
This emergency/quick purchase was required due to a situation in which immediate repairs were needed to prevent further loss or damage to University property.
The existing Trane centrifugal chiller at Currens Hall was damaged in a fire on June 28, 2012. Offices and classes had to be relocated while the building was closed due to lack of cooling during the extremely high temperatures. The volatile chemicals stored in the building also had to be secured with proper ventilation. A temporary rental chiller was installed allowing the building to be open for business on July 2, 2012. The University awarded a contract to the chiller manufacturer for the necessary parts and repair services to get the existing chiller back up and running. There is a weekly rental fee for the temporary chiller. Also, it is less efficient than the building installed equipment, increasing the electrical usage until the damaged chiller is repaired.
