The University awarded a contract for craniomaxillofacial implants.
Stryker is used in craniofacial surgery that is a surgical subspecialty that deals with congenital and acquired deformities of the head, skull, face, neck, jaws, and associated structures. Although craniofacial treatment often involves manipulation of bone, craniofacial surgery is not tissue-specific; craniofacial surgeons deal with bone, skin, nerve, muscle, teeth, and other related anatomy. This surgery is also used to treat congenital conditions such as cleft palate. Typically during craniofacial procedures, bone is cut, moved, modified, and realigned to correct a dentofacial deformity or injury with plates and screws.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Stryker craniomaxillofacial implants have to do with direct patient care. Without the Stryker craniomaxillofacial implants, the University of Illinois Hospital would not be able to offer craniofacial surgery, that in turn would drive patients elsewhere and would result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
