The University awarded a contract for maxillofacial implants.
AxoGen?s implants are used in orthodontic and maxillofacial surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery or simply jaw surgery, which is surgery designed to correct conditions of the jaw and face related to structure, growth, sleep apnea, temporomandibular joints, (TMJ) disorders, malocclusion problems owing to skeletal disharmonies, or other orthodontic problems that cannot be easily treated with braces. This surgery is also used to treat congenital conditions such as cleft palate. Typically during oral surgery, bone is cut, moved, modified, and realigned to correct a dentofacial deformity or injury.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) AxoGen, Incorporated surgical implants have to do with direct patient care. Without the AxoGen, Incorporated surgical implants the University of Illinois Hospital would not be able to offer maxillofacial procedures, that in turn would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
