The University awarded a contract for neurostimulation implants.
Nevro Corporation offers implants that are used in neurostimulation for the management of pain. The implantable spinal cord stimulator is used in patients to aid in the management of pain from failed back surgery syndrome, radiculopathy, complex regional pain syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, et cetera. Spinal cord stimulation is delivered with a small spinal cord stimulator?similar to a pacemaker?that is implanted under the skin. The neurostimulator delivers mild electrical pulses to your spine, causing a tingling sensation in the area of your chronic pain. Spinal cord stimulation provides pain relief by modifying the pain messages before they reach the brain. The neurostimulator sends out mild electrical pulses that reach the brain faster than the pain signal can arrive.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Nevro Corporation spinal cord stimulators have to do with direct patient care and without the Nevro Corporation implants, the University of Illinois Hospital would not be able to offer paint management procedures that in turn would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
