The University awarded a contract for Medtronic coronary products.
The Medtronic Coronary Products are used in angioplasty which consists of stents, balloons, and ancillaries. Coronary angioplasty, also called percutaneous coronary intervention, is a procedure used to open clogged heart arteries. Angioplasty uses a tiny balloon catheter that is inserted in a blocked blood vessel to help widen it and improve blood flow to your heart. Stents are small mesh tubes inserted to keep arteries open after a procedure called angioplasty (percutaneous coronary intervention, or PCI). Drug-eluting stents have a polymer coating over mesh that emits a drug over time to help keep the blockage from coming back.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Medtronic USA disposable supplies have to do with direct patient treatment and care. Without access to these specific supplies the Hospital would not be able to offer patient care that in turn would drive patients else where and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
