The University awarded a contract for blood testing consumables and reagents.
Instrumentation Laboratory offers consumables and reagents that are used in testing blood samples from patients. The blood gas and reagent supplies needed are for electromechanical coagulation and blood gas analysis systems. The electromechanical coagulation is a microprocessor-controlled electromechanical coagulation instrument designed to determine coagulation endpoints in fresh and citrated whole blood samples. Coagulation tests measure your blood's ability to clot and how long it takes to clot. Testing can help the doctor assess a patient's risk of excessive bleeding or developing clots (thrombosis) somewhere in your blood vessels. Blood gas analysis measures the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. It may also be used to determine the pH of the blood, or how acidic it is. The test is commonly known as a blood gas analysis or arterial blood gas (ABG) test.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Instrumentation Laboratory?s medical consumables and reagents are critical for patient diagnosis that inform the patient care needed. Without access to these specific supplies the hospital would not be able to offer the appropriate patient care that in turn would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
