The University awarded a contract for a High Pressure Line System.
The High Pressure Line System is a 200,000 psi air-hydraulic compressor to be used for high pressure microbial growth experiments reproducing the conditions of the subglacial ocean of Titan, an icy satellite of Saturn. These high pressure experiments would take place in specialized vessels built by Harwood Engineering. These high pressure vessels will be equipped with a system for subsampling experiments while under pressure.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) Grant funded research (NASA). Quote was included in the funded proposal. Harwood Engineering has unique expertize in high pressure systems for laboratory research.
