The University awarded a contract for AxoGen implants used in surgery.
AxoGen's implants are used in orthodontic and maxillofacial surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery or simply jaw surgery, which is surgery designed to correct conditions of the jaw and face related to structure, growth, sleep apnea, temporomandibular joints, disorders, malocclusion problems owing to skeletal disharmonies, or other orthodontic problems that cannot be easily treated with braces. This surgery is also used to treat congenital conditions such as cleft palate. Typically during oral surgery, bone is cut, moved, modified, and realigned to correct a dento-facial deformity or injury. The AxoGen's implants consist of nerve allografts, nerve protectors, nerve connectors and ancillaries.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The surgical supplies provided by Axogen Inc. have to do with direct patient care service. Without this type of patient supplies the hospital will not be able to provide this type of procedure and a patient will go else where and intern we will take a loss in revenue.
