The University awarded a contract for electroencephalogram testing supplies.
The array and electrodes supplied by Rhythmlink are used to treat patients during electroencephalogram testing. The main use of an EEG is to detect and investigate epilepsy, a condition that causes repeated seizures. An EEG will help the doctor identify the type of epilepsy a patient has, what may be triggering the patients seizures and how best to treat them. Less often, an EEG may be used to investigate other problems, such as dementia. The electrodes are metal discs attached to the scalp and the other end is connected to equipment that records the results.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The surgical supplies that Rhythmlink Holdings provides are directly related to patient care services. It is crucial for hospitals to have access to this type of patient supply to ensure that patients receive the best possible care. Without these supplies, patients may choose to go elsewhere for treatment, and this could result in a loss of revenue for the hospital.
